Here’s the vision: you sink a perfect 10-foot putt without going to the golf course. A backyard putting green lets you sharpen your game at home and enhances curb appeal. Swapping natural turf for synthetic grass reduces mowing days, while a dedicated practice putting green keeps you focused on lower scores. Thinking of building one? Here are the steps to follow:

1. OUTLINE YOUR GREEN

First, check your yard dimensions you have. Even a 10×15‑foot space allows for a couple of holes and a border fringe. Sketch out your ideal layout — oval, kidney, or free‑form — and note where you might roll out a golf hitting mat. Don’t forget to add a few feet for walkways or decorative borders.

2. SET YOUR BUDGET

The price of artificial grass can range from $5 to $8 per ft². Once you factor in installation, labor, and site access, the total cost usually ranges from $10–$14 per square foot. Add-ons like golf hitting mats and returns raise the total cost, but can add more function to your space.

3. DECIDE ON YOUR SURFACE

There’s no perfect answer when it comes to artificial grass. Low‑pile turf provide faster roll for fast greens, while dense turf gives traditional speed. Ask your landscaping team about infill types — some fills improve lifespan without affecting roll. If you want to maximize realism, we highly recommend Golden Bear Turf.

4. KNOW THE INSTALL STEPS

A typical install is done in four parts: excavation and leveling, adding a crushed stone foundation, preventing weed growth, and installing and rolling out your turf. For a compact putting green, expect 3 to 5 days of work. Larger projects or more complex grading can take longer. Quick tip: On-site power/water = smoother job.

5. ENHANCE THE GREEN SPACE

Night sessions are possible when you install soft pathway lights around your green. Stone or brick accents can give a beautiful, polished look. For added challenge, set up a chip zone using a golf hitting mat — perfect when you need to practice longer shots.
