Pro-Level Home Turf: The Custom Backyard Setup of Sam Burns

Sam Burns made his breakthrough on Tour after joining the professional ranks in 2017 and has grown stronger with every season. He’s secured several PGA Tour victories, including back-to-back Valspar Championship titles and early professional success on the Korn Ferry Tour — achievements that explain why on-course feel matters to him.
PROJECT SNAPSHOT
Putting green: 1,000 sq ft — GB177 (Golden Bear Putt), color 301
Lawn turf grass: 1,500 sq ft — 164SW, color 301
Sand bunker: 144 sq ft — Artificial turf topped with real sand
Total project: 2,644 sq ft
THE PRACTICE PUTTING SURFACE: GB177 GOLDEN BEAR PUTT
Sam selected GB177 (color 301) for a practice surface that reads like real greens. The compact pile height gives authentic roll and consistent pace, so every stroke teaches you something. For a player who practices feel when off-tour, that consistency matters.

THE LAWN: 164SW IN COLOR 301
The 1,500 sq ft lawn area uses 164SW in the same color to create a smooth transition from green to fringe. That space is ideal for warmups, small chip shots, relaxing with family, and retaining a clean look with easy maintenance.

THE BUNKER: REAL SAND OVER TURF
Instead of a faux bunker, Sam’s bunker has natural sand placed over artificial grass. That offers authentic bunker practice while maintaining neat boundaries and easy maintenance around the green. It’s a practical idea for anyone considering a synthetic grass installation with custom features.

THE BENEFITS OF THIS DESIGN
This setup blends practice with leisure play. A practice putting area lets Sam dial in speed and line. The artificial lawn provides gentile landing zones for shots and a place for family gatherings. The sand patch delivers true bunker practice without the fuss of a full-scale bunker renovation.
Background on Sam: Sam claimed his first title at the Savannah Golf Championship in 2018, birdying the last three holes to win, and later collected additional Tour wins, including the Sanderson Farms PGA event and the Valspar Championship. He sharpened his game at college at LSU before making it big on Tour.
